The First Frost

Viewed 101 times overall

At the beginning of this week we had heavy frost. It is good but also sad for my plants in the garden, as I see the sad end to my many plants. Today I got up early and went to put the garbage out. The wind was blowing quite heavy making the day very cold. The leaves were all blowing. I felt I stepped out into a magical moment of a cold, dark morning. After dropping the kids to school, I came back and went to take care of my lawn. I also went and brought some plants in for the winter. My vegetable garden is all wilted and sad looking. My morning glory didn’t bloom. The wind was so heavy that the trees are almost naked with bags full of leaves to rake. While I was busy working in the cold i thought of what to make for tonight’s dinner.

This is what I cooked….

Awesome News!!!

This is great news for members of Family Ties. We now have a new feature which will allow registered members to manage photo albums of their own. They can choose to make the album public or keep it private to registered members only. There is no limit to how many albums you can have or how many photos you can include in each album.

To use this feature, you must log in at http://www.roachville.com and then click on the ‘Photos’ option at the top of the page. (Oh yes! We’ve moved the menu bar to the top for more visibility.) Once you’ve clicked on the ‘Photos’ option, you can then create a new Album by clicking on the ‘Add an Album’ link.

The creating of Albums is pretty simple:

  • You give your album a Name and a description (however long you want) and mark it as Public or Private
  • Click ‘Create Album’
  • From the list of Albums that will appear, click on ‘Add Photos’
  • In the Upload photos page, you can upload up to 10 photos at once, so click on the Browse button and select a photo from your computer.
  • When you have selected up to 10 photos, click on the ‘Upload Photos’ button.
  • Now click on the ‘Manage Albums’ tab located just above the title that reads ‘Upload Photos’
  • You will  now be presented with your Album list.
  • Click on the ‘edit’ link and then alter the details that appear (if you wish)
  • Then click ‘Save Changes’
  • You are done.

It sounds like a lot of steps, but once you get going, it’s very easy.

Now that you can have your own photo albums, why not start creating some right away. We would love to see what you have to share.

The Journey Back

A couple of nights ago, as we lay on the bed, we struck up a conversation which

kindled my memories. My wife, Rene, mentioned that, in the south of India, they pronounced my surname as ‘Rocha’ and not ‘Roach’. This took me back to the Chemistry lab in St. Columba’s School, New Delhi.

I was studying in that school and my St. Columba's School, New DelhiChemistry teacher, in class 9, was Mrs. Thomas. At the start of the period, she would, faithfully, do a roll call. When she called out my name, she would say – ‘Derrick Rocha’. She was from the south of India, you see. I would sit quietly and not respond. She would look up and question me and, as always, I would say that my name was not ‘Derrick Rocha’ and that is was ‘Derrick Roach’. She would smile, but the kick I got out of not answering and telling her that she was wrong, was really great. ;)

Honouring Our Ancestors

“If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.”

It all started when i got married. I wanted to know more about my husband and his family. What is the meaning of his family name which attaches to my name. With that I learnt about my name, too. I did my research and, for my excitement, I did find some information on the Internet. I still get excited and I do my happy dance when I find information on public places. These have become good times in my life.
